Medical Monkeys visits Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of MN

We, on behalf of Medical Monkeys, were recently invited to be part of the Star Studio Bingo at one of our partner’s locations, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of MN.  It really reminded us of why we started Medical Monkeys.

Star Studio is a closed Circuit TV channel inside Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.   They broadcast a variety of Live and interactive programming and other content to the hospital rooms for patients and family’s to watch 24/7.

From watching part of their previous Bingo segments I had an idea of what to expect.  Bingo host, The Dude, pulls the Bingo numbers and the co-host puts them on the Bingo board.  The Dude chats with patients and/or family members when they call in for a Bingo, or to share a cute joke.

I also knew from other segments that The Dude has an awesome rapport with the children and families.  There are constant smiles and laughter!

What I didn’t expect is the overwhelming good feeling you get by being part of something so special.  You cannot help but smile and laugh along, and before you know it the hour is up!

We brought a bag full of Medical Monkeys for The Dude to hand out as he wanted.  We were lucky to be able to offer a Medical Monkey of choice to one of the children.  He politely asked if he could select a Medical Monkey for his younger sister.

Yes, this patient was going home that day, but not before he watched one more Star Studio Bingo with The Dude.  Besides my daughter he and his Mom were the only live audience attendees.  We heard from others via the phone, but there sat this patient, a young brave boy, in the front row with his Mom.  He was in his Spiderman costume, and Vikings cap.  He was a great conversationalist with The Dude, impressed us with his dancing, and by the end of the show was convinced to proudly show his costume on TV.

That’s why Medical Monkeys was created, for courageous and inspiring people like him.

If you would like to help out Children’s Hospitals and Clinics MN, chose them from our drop-down list when you purchase a Medical Monkey.  For each sale which they are chosen, we donate $10!

For our full album of pictures, please see the album on our Medical Monkey’s Facebook page, or the one on the Star Studio Facebook page.  Below is a link to the Video bingo from that day…even a few minutes is guaranteed to bring you smiles 😉

Medical Monkey’s Charity Partner Spotlight: Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota

Print

When we started Medical Monkeys and were creating the list of charities and organizations we hoped to put on our list, one of the first ones we wanted to include was Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Not only had we long admired Children’s for what they have done over the years, and continue to do, but there is a personal reason. Our son benefited from their expertise. We were very impressed with the processes, staff, and our experience.

Childrens2 Childrens1

Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of MN continue to be leaders and innovators. Not only in the field of medicine, but also in the extra special care of their patients and families. One of the things we think is very cool is their Star Studio. Star Studio is their in-house TV channel. They handpick programming for the kids, and their “Channel 13″ is geared specifically to young patients and their families as an alternative to mainstream commercial broadcasting.  They have a wonderfully talented cast, including The Dude.  Trust me, he will put a smile on your face, and make you laugh!  He has a wonderfully calm, assuring and positive demeanor.

Childrens3

Just announced was their new Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota App! It is designed to help make the experience for patients and families the best, including hospital maps, news and events, and the ability to find Children’s clinical staff and locations.

We are very proud to have Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota as a Medical Monkeys Partner, and sincerely grateful for their support! Please check out their website to learn more, and consider choosing them as your Charity of Choice for your next Medical Monkey purchase!

We practice Patient-and Family-Centered Care at Children’s, a philosophy that respects the pivotal role of the family as the constant in their child’s life. It acknowledges that families are the experts on their children and are the primary care givers and source of support. At Children’s patients and families are encouraged to participate as active members of the health care team, because we know that informed patients and families make better decisions. We strive to provide clear, honest and useful information in a respectful way to all those we care for. Children’s is committed to providing the best care possible, working together in the best interest of the child.

The Christian Grey Face of Fifty Shades of Grey and the Tie He Might Wear

A British scientist has gathered information and come up with this artist’s rendering of what the ideal Christian Grey from ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ would look like.  Do you agree?

We certainly don’t think so!  Right now we would vote for Ian Somerhalder, best known as Damon in The Vampire Diaries…picture below tie.  Who would you like to see play Christian Grey in the movie version of Fifty Shades of Grey?

The good news is we do have a tie that resembles the tie described in the first book of the trilogy!  Quantities are limited, and they are going fast!

Remembering 9/11/01 – 10 Year Anniversary

Probably every one of us remembers exactly where we were when the first Twin Tower was hit.

I was at home, having already sent our son off to school on the bus for 5th grade.  As normal I had the television on to our local news, when the breaking news of the first Twin Towers had been struck by an airplane.  Like many, I assumed it was a tragic air accident…something must have gone terribly wrong with the flight.

While I was curious to learn what had happened, I continued getting our 9 year old twin daughters ready for school.  We got to the bus stop early as usual, and I was anxious to chat with the other Moms about what had happened in New York.  Everyone was sad about it, and we discusses what might have happened.  Then another Mom got to the stop and said the second tower had been hit, in the same manner…with a plane.  Silence.  Chills.  We saw the bus coming down the street.  Do we still send the children to school?  What is going on in New York?  Collectively we sent them on the bus.

My husband and I talked multiple times on the phone.  Should he come home?  Were we in danger here in Minnesota?  Eventually the company sent everyone home early that day.

Then I sat in front of the television for the rest of the day…in disbelief of what I was watching as the Twin Towers came down.  And also the news of the Pentagon and the fourth plane which came down in PA.

The skies became silent except for the occasional roar of a fighter jet.  More silence, more chills.  We mourned with many as we learned the numbers of those who perished, and their identities and life’s stories.  We have never forgotten the day, and we never will.

Fast-forward 10 years (minus a day):  my husband, son and I drove to the college our twins attend.  In front of the chapel now sits 2 small sections of the I-beams from the Twin Towers.  Reality and history at our fingertips.  They are bent and a bit rusted…but the story is still strong without words being needed.

Thanks to my friend Anita for this summary: “Today on 9/11 a moment of silence is needed because we have to remember and pay tribute to all of those who died, and to thank all of those who did everything possible to save as many people as they could. We shed tears and we came together strong and determined never to allow this to happen again. We can never forget September 11 2001 because our world and our lives were changed forever, God Bless the USA.”

It’s the Little Things in a Business That Mean A Lot

While we’ve been in business for many years, we’re not one of the “big guys”…and we’re totally fine with that!  Because we are a small, niche retailer, we can go one (or two) steps beyond what the Big Guys can, especially in Customer Service.

This was evident when we were contacted over the Labor Day weekend by a new customer.  We had our office closed on Sunday and Monday, but out of habit we were still checking the phone and email.  A customer desperately wanted to talk to someone and we got connected early Tuesday morning.

Her son is going to his last Homecoming dance as a High School student.  Every other dance she has gotten him a Jerry Garcia Tie.  Her three questions were:

1) Are your Jerry Garcia ties the real deal?  (Yes)

2) Is it the same tie that the other tie company is showing (at a much higher price)?  (Yes)

3) Can you guarantee when you will ship it out – the other guys couldn’t  (Yes)

I felt for her because I also have a son, not much older.  I know what it’s like to want to make that special occassion better, by looking put-together with an awesome tie that matches the date’s dress.

I also felt for her because I am also that consumer who wants direct replies to my questions, is cost-concious, and feels better with a human connection in scenarios such as this.

The tie is on it’s way.  We’ve done our part, and hope the USPS does it part and gets it to her by Friday.  We look forward to seeing pictures!
